Grateful Remembrance of Benjamin Ferencz

At the Peace Palace in The Hague, on 2 June 2024, Africa Legal Aid (AFLA) participated in a lovely and privately sponsored ceremony of grateful remembrance, convened by Don Ferencz, celebrating the spirit of Benjamin Ferencz and Thomas Buergenthal. Ben Ferencz was of course the last surviving prosecutor of the Nuremberg Trials who departed in April 2023, and Thomas Buergenthal was a renowned jurist and a former judge of the International Court of Justice who passed in May 2023.

Benjamin Ferencz was a friend of AFLA’s and the executive director Evelyn A Ankumah, and he contributed to funding AFLA activities on international criminal justice through his Planethood Foundation.

Notably, Ben Ferencz was a champion of international criminal justice, and ending impunity for the crime of aggression, which earned him the nickname ‘Mr Aggression.’
